Maintaining Topiary Boxwood Part 3

Insights from Brent Bailey at St George Boxwood Nursery

Today, we will introduce you to two key products that play a vital role in maintaining the health and vitality of your garden: Triabon slow-release fertiliser and EM™ from EM New Zealand Soil & Crop.

Triabon Slow-Release Fertiliser:

When using Triabon, it's essential to understand the application process. For example, in an 80L pot, we typically recommend starting with one dose (small handful) of Triabon, followed by an additional half dose. This measured approach ensures that your plants receive adequate nourishment without risking over-fertilisation.

EM™ from EM New Zealand Soil & Crop:

EM™, a great product that focuses on improving soil health through the introduction of beneficial microbes. These microbes work in harmony with your plants, enhancing nutrient uptake, promoting soil structure, and even deterring common pests such as Mealybugs and scale.

To use EM™ effectively, we recommend diluting 200ml of the product in a nine-litre watering can. Begin by watering the top of your plants to facilitate absorption, then proceed to water the soil around the base of each plant. This monthly application helps to maintain a balanced soil ecosystem, ensuring optimal conditions for plant growth.

Why It Matters:

You might be wondering why we place such emphasis on fertilisation and soil health. The truth is, a healthy soil ecosystem is the foundation of a thriving garden. By providing your plants with the nutrients they need and fostering a supportive environment for root development, you're setting them up for success.

Moreover, by using products like Triabon and EM™, you're not only investing in the immediate health of your plants but also in the long-term sustainability of your garden. Healthy, robust plants are more resilient to pests, diseases, and environmental stressors, ensuring that your garden remains a source of beauty and enjoyment for years to come.

In summary, fertilisation and soil health are critical aspects of plant care, especially in container gardening scenarios. By incorporating products like Triabon and EM™ into your routine, you can provide your plants with the nutrients and support they need to thrive.
